CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — White nationalist Christopher Cantwell has pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from a torch-lit rally at the University of Virginia last summer.

News outlets in Charlottesville report Cantwell entered the plea Friday to two counts of assault and battery after being accused of using pepper spray against two counter-protesters. Under the details of the plea agreement, he won't serve additional jail time but will be barred from Virginia for five years.

Cantwell told The Associated Press he maintains that he used pepper spray in self-defense during the rally, which came a day ahead of a much larger gathering of white nationalists in downtown Charlottesville. He says he plans to return to home to Keene, New Hampshire, this weekend.

Cantwell was also fined $250 for violating the terms of his bond.
