With the Scripps National Spelling Bee canceled, many top spellers who would have been on the bee stage this week are instead competing online. The SpellPundit National Online Spelling Bee was launched by two teenage ex-spellers to fill the void left by Scripps' decision. The bee is especially meaningful for eighth-graders, who are in their final year of eligibility for spelling competitions. Scripps has said it will not allow ninth-graders to compete next year. The SpellPundit bee concludes Thursday night. Anson Cook of Potomac, Maryland, is one of the 16 finalists and says he feels he's achieved his goal of making the Scripps prime-time finals.
