C'Ville/UVA Offer Anniversary Plans

Large Areas To Be Closed Anniversary Weekend Of Unite The Right

July 27, 2018 - 1:01 pm

Charlottesville, VA (wrva.com) - Despite the fact that Unite the Right organizer Jason Kessler has abandonned his efforts to hold an anniversary rally in Charlottesville, the city and the University of Virginia are planning to deal with potential events.  UVA will be closing access to the Thomas Jefferson statue the entire August 10-13 weekend.  The statue was the site of a white nationalist torch lit rally prior to the Unite the Right chaos.

Charlottesville, meanwhile, will be closing several streets.  Exact closures can be seen on the map above this story.  The roads being closed are around the Downtown Mall and Market Street Park.  The park is where the Robert E. Lee statue is located, and it was along the mall that an alleged white supremacist drove into a crowd, injuring several and killing Heather Heyer.

Two state police trooper-pilots also died during last year's rally when their helicopter crashed.
