Commision To Vet Downtown Redevelopment Proposal

Richmond, VA (Newsradio -- It was a packed chamber as Richmond City Council took up a proposal to establish a commission to review the $1.4 billion plan to replace the aging Coliseum and redevelop some 20 acres in downtown. Council heard from both sides of the issue, but in the end voted 8-1 to go with an independent panel made up of 9 members who will have 90 days to issue a report. Council also agreed to have a consultant vet the proposal, the details of which have not been made public yet by the mayor's office.

The lone no vote came from Councilman Michael Jones. One supporter of the panel told members "You have the opportunity to create history here, so we can get revenue in for education." Another supporter sees the commission as a delay tactic, but opponents complain the project is too risky, and there are questions about how the city will pay for it.
