Richmond, VA (WRVA) - An accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel near mile marker 12 occurred around 6:30 Friday night.  Reportedly a tractor trailer and a van were involved in the accident. The truck went over the barrier on the Western side of the bridge-tunnel's southbound span; the van remained on the bridge.

Divers located the truck in the water Saturday morning and found 1 body in the cab of the truck. Divers say visibility is severely limited where the truck is located in around 20 to 25 feet of water. Some witnesses reported that two people were in the truck’s cab. Five people were in the van involved in the accident, they were all checked out at the scene and released. Traffic was completely shut down on the southbound side of the bridge until one lane was opened around 8:45 p.m. It was a couple of hours before traffic was allowed to flow freely in the southbound lanes.

The accident remains under investigation. A strong thunderstorm was blowing through the area when the accident occurred.
