Richmond, VA _  Richmond Police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old suspect with wounding two police officers in early morning shootings Tuesday, that also left the suspect wounded.

The suspect, Waseem A. Hackett, 19, of no known permanent address, has been charged with malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.  Police say Hackett was also served with outstanding warrants from a nearby jurisdiction.

Richmond PD says the incident started around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday when they responded to the 800 block of Semmes Avenue for a report of an armed person.  Responding officers encountered three males in the 1000 block of Semmes and were beginning to question the men when one of them pulled out a gun and exchanged gunfire with one of the officers.  Both officers were hit, along with the suspect.  All three were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the other two individuals remained at the scene for questioning.

One officer suffered life threatening injuries, while the other officers injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.

Hackett was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and police say more charges are pending.

Police say only one of the three men they encountered had been involved in ongoing protests, although they did not say which one.
