Controversial Primary Scheduled For This Weekend

GOP Controversy Over Delegate Race

May 30, 2019 - 1:02 pm

Hanover, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Republicans voters are scheduled to vote Saturday in a firehouse primary to select a candidate for the 97th House district.  However, the process has been filled with controversy, with one candidate, Scott Wyatt, already claiming he took the nomination in a convention, and the other candidate, Delegate Chris Peace, claiming the process changed and that the convention was invalid.

Political Expert Bob Holsworth says more than likely, the results this weekend will mean that two candidates will lay claim to the nomination.  He thinks it could end up in the courts, although Holsworth says the courts have been reluctant to get involved in party nomination battles.

Wyatt is challenging Peace over Peace's decision to support Medicaid expansion, which gave Governor Ralph Northam (D) a big political win.  Behind the scenes, Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment (R-James City) is backing Wyatt, while House Sepaker Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights) is backing Peace.
