June 29, 2018 - 11:30 am

Richmond, VA (wrva.com) -- The Chesterfield Fire Department is asking people not to set off fireworks this fourth of July.  Fire Department Spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore says they see an increase of fires, injuries, and even deaths this time of year because of fireworks use.   Most fireworks are illegal in the Richmond area, with some exceptions in Hanover County.  All projectile fireworks are illegal not only to fire, but to possess as well.

Elmore says they are recommending people go to the professional shows that exist around the city.  He says even sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees, with a realy burn risk.

However, Elmore is also asking that if people do go to the professional shows that they not stop on the side of major roads to watch them, as it is a safety hazard.
