Governor To Declare Emergency

Comes Ahead Of Potential Issues With Anniversary of Charlottesville

August 08, 2018 - 1:45 pm

Richmond, VA (wrva.com) - UPDATE:  Governor Ralph Northam will be declaring a State of Emergency ahead of this weekend's events.

ORIGINAL: Governor Ralph Northam (D) says members of the Virginia National Guard will be available, if necessary, this weekend, as Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. prepare for events tied to the anniversary of the Unite the Right Rally last year.  Three people died in the 2017 rally, including activist Heather Heyer, and two state police trooper-pilots (Berke Bates and Jay Cullen).

Northam says he will be monitoring events from Richmond.  The Democrat says he has had good conversations with officials in Charlottesville, and that they have learned from the experiences of last year.

Northam says they are ready for anything that may occur with this year's events.   An actual organized rally is planned for Washington on Sunday.  Several minor events are planned in Charlottesville, but the city is closing down streets and limiting parking to avoid a repeat.
