Hanover, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) --  Hanover Sheriff's Deputies are investigating what they consider to be an animal cruelty matter.  Deputies say at some point on November 27th, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a horse along Farrington Road appears to have been shot.  The horse, named Penny, had a wound in the chest consistent with a gunshot.

Deputies say the horse is recovering.  It is not clear if Penny was targeted, or if was shot accidentally.  Hanover is asking people who knew if there were hunters or practice shooters in the area to please contact them.

Hunters are also being asked to be aware of what may be beyond their target/
