Henrico Cancels Winter Sports

As Chesterfield Holds Meeting Following Virtual Return

Henrico, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Henrico Schools announced Monday that high schools would not be playing winter sports this year.  The decision comes as the area is seeing growing numbers of Covid cases.  The district sent a letter to students that read in part "The circumstances... created numerous challenges for our athletic programming, including the ability to keep our student-athletes safe and healthy (basketball, sideline cheer, gymnastics, indoor track, swimming and wrestling all take place indoors, in competitive environments where physical distancing cannot be maintained.) While we regret having to take this position, which will no doubt be disappointing to many of our student-athletes, we will always prioritize the health and safety of everyone involved. "

The announcement came at the same time that Chesterfield's school board was holding an emergency meeting, following its decision Wednesday to move back to virtual school.   The county stopped hybrid classes after weekley cases per 100,000 people crossed 25 people.  During the meeting, district officials said there was not a great deal of spread within school, but widespread in the community threatened to overrun their mitigation efforts.

The district will now discuss its return plans at a board meeting on January 12th.  Students are currently remaining virtual through Janaury 29th, which covers the rest of the first semester, as well as giving a cushion from any holiday-related spread.
