May 30, 2019 - 12:51 pm

Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Hurricane season unofficially gets underway this weekend, and with disaster preparedness high on people's minds following tornadoes and flooding in the middle of the country, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management is asking people to get ready.

There has already been one named storm this year, but Andrea did not come close to land.  Last year, the Richmond area was struck by tornadoes that were part of what remained of Hurricane Florence.

VDEM Spokesman Jeff Caldwell says you can find information on how to preapare here.  The season runs through the end of November.  Virginia traditionally gets its impacts in September and October.
