Governor Orders Zone "A" Evacuation

Mandatory Evacuation of Zone "A" Ordered In Hampton Roads

September 10, 2018 - 6:34 pm

Richmond, VA _  Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has ordered a mandatory evacuation of zone "A" in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.  Northam says they are the most low lying areas and prone to flooding.  Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen, meanwhile, says the city will issue an evacuation order for Sandbridge, Back Bay, and the southern watershed.

The state introduced a system called "Know Your Zone" last year for Hampton Roads.  Residents can go to and type in their addresses to find out what zone they are in. People without internet access are urged to contact their local emergency managers or call 211.  The evacuations are set to begin at 8am on Tuesday September 11.

The Governor  declared a state of emergency Saturday ahead of the hurricane.  In an unprecedented move, the entire Virginia National Guard has been mobilized to respond to the storm which is expected to bring catastrophic rain to a widespread portion of Virginia.
