Black Student: Northam handed out cotton & asked to imagine being enslaved

Richmond, VA (Newsradio 1140WRVA.com) -- First Lady Pam Northam is being criticized for handing out cotton to two black teens during a tour of the slave quarters at the Governor's Mansion, and asking them to imagine being enslaved. The teens were part of a group of Senate Pages getting a look at the Executive Mansion.

One of the teens, an 8th grader, sent a letter to lawmakers. She described the incident as "beyond inappropriate, especially considering recent events" that have engulfed Governor Northam. A racist photo was discovered on his medical school yearbook page from 1984, and as the Governor tried to explain he was not in the photo showing one person in blackface and another in KKK robe, he seemed to make things worse as he admitted to darkening his face to look like Michael Jackson for a dance contest also in 1984. Northam has resisted numerous calls to resign.

The Page's mother also wrote lawmakers saying the slave quarters incident runs counter to Northam's request for forgiveness over "racially insensitive past actions." Pam Northam in a statement says "I regret that I upset anyone."
