Pilot Rescue Takes Hours After Plane Crash In Swamp

Plane Goes Down Near Tappahannock Airport

Tappahannock, Va. ( - State Police say it took multiple hours this morning to rescue a pilot whose plane went down in a swampy area near the Tappahannock-Essex County Airport.  State Police say they received the distress call around 4:20 this morning, and it took almost two hours just to locate the plane.

The plane was finally loctated around 6:15, and then it took another three hours to get the pilot out.  He was flown to the hospital with serious injuries.  Henrico Fire and EMS were among the agencies aiding in the rescue.

The Fire Service also had to burn a path for rescuers to get to the plane.
