Richmond, VA _  The Richmond Police Department has made an arrest in connection to the death of a toddler who died after being sexually assaulted at a motel on Midlothian Turnpike back in May.

Barron T. Spurlock, 25, of the 3100 block of Baronet Drive, is currently in custody on unrelated charges. He has been charged with murder and object sexual penetration.

Police say they were called at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8,  for a report of a 17-month old child who had been assaulted in the 6400 block of Midlothian Turnpike. Officers responded to a local hospital where the toddler was being treated for life threatening injuries. Two days later, the child, identified by family members as Nariah Brown, succumbed to her injuries.  Police, at the time, said the mother had left the child in the room with someone she trusted.

“This was one of the more emotionally trying investigations for our detectives because of the age of the victim,” said Major Crimes Lt. Erlan Marshall, “We hope this arrest provides some measure of closure for the family and the community.”
