Richmond Tourism Expects Big Hotel Weekend

NASCAR, 10k, Swimming Taking Up Rooms

April 12, 2019 - 5:05 pm

Henrico, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond Region Tourism officials think this weekend could pass the hotel occupancy record, set in 2014.   The reason, along with NASCAR, the region is hosting the Monument Avenue 10k, Olympic swimmers in Chesterfield, and other events.

The record was set during the April race weekend in 2014, at 94.6% occupancy.  The April races usually have higher occupancy, despite the September races either being the last race before, or now, during the Chase.  Race weekends are Richmond's top occupancy weekends, even as crowds at the track have decreased.  Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier says they are actively working to bring more people in, both through marketing and changing prices.

NASCAR is scheduled to race both Friday and Saturday night.  The Monument Avenue 10k is Saturday morning.  Swimming will run through Saturday.
