Snow Creating Dangerous Driving Conditions

Richmond, VA (Newsradio 1140wrva.com) -- Much of the Richmond area is dealing with a foot or more of snow from the winter storm that started Sunday morning and is still over parts of Virginia Monday morning. The official snow total is 11.5 inches recorded at Richmond International Airport but folks in western Henrico reporting 14 inches of snow. The highest total in Virginia or North Carolina, which also got walloped is 24 inches in Whitetop, Virginia in Grayson County near the Tennessee border.

 

VDOT is asking folks to stay off the roads if possible. Crews are working around the clock to clear the snow. Most of the major roads are passable but most neighborhoods streets are still snow covered. There have been dozens in crashes in the Richmond area including a State Trooper who suffered minor injuries when his parkted car was rear-ended by an SUV on I-95 in Hanover. 

All area schools are closed, and hundreds of flights have been cancelled including more than 100 at Richmond's airport. More than 35 flights in Richmond are cancelled for Monday. If you're flying or picking someone up, check with their airline. 

Tens of thousands have lost power with the storm including about 10,000 in the Richmond area. That number has been going up and down as Dominion Energy crews work to restore electricity.
