Alleghany County, VA _  A man is charged in southwest Virginia with attempted murder of a police officer and is facing more charges following an overnight standoff during which he allegedly fired on responding officers from a number of police agencies.

Sheriff Kevin Hall says a call for shots fired at a home was received just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Two deputies and a Virginia State Police Trooper were first to arrive on scene and were fired upon.  Hall says no one was injured but at least one State Police cruiser was hit.   The officers called for backup and received assistance from an emergency response team, as well as Botetourt County law enforcement agencies.

The officers did not return fire and Marshall Meadows, 59, was taken into custody just after midnight.  Hall says Meadows was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
