State Trooper Killed in Raid

Shooter Also Died at Home near Farmville

Cumberland, VA (Newsradio - UPDATE:  State Police have identified the suspect shot and killed in the incident as Corey Johnson, 44, of Cumberland County.

A State Trooper is dead as well as a suspect following a drug raid near Farmville. State Police say a SWAT team was assisting in the operation at a home in the 1500 block of Route 45 around 10 p.m. Monday when someone inside started shooting at them. Police returned fire killing the gunman, who was the only person in the residence. 

Trooper Lucas Dowell was critically injured and rushed to a hospital in Farmville where he died. State Police Superintendent Colonel Gary Settle says "This is an extremely difficult day for the State Police. We are humbled by Lucas' selfless sacrifice and grateful for his dedicated service to the Commonwealth. He will forever be remembered by his State Police Family for his great strength of character, tenacity, valor, loyality and sense of humor." 

Dowell graduated from the State Police academy in 2014 and is from Chilhowie, in Smyth County, Virginia.
