Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Mayor Levar Stoney, in a one-on-one interview with WRVA's Matt Demlein, says if he had 2020 to do over again, he would have changed the leadership at Richmond Police earlier. Stoney forced out former Chief William Smith in the midst of summer protests, after an incident in which protestors at the Lee Monument were teargassed by officers.
Stoney says the does not have anything negative to say about Chief William Smith. However, he says the department needed a change agent, and a reformer, and he believes he has that with Chief Gerald Smith.
The Mayor declined to say exactly what he would like to see on Monument, saying only that the process needs "robust community involvement."
