(SUFFOLK, Va. – wrva.com) Suffolk Police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday morning, August 16, at the intersection of East Washington Street and Liberty Street.

Emergency Communications was contacted at approximately 10:43 a.m. The preliminary investigation indicates that two adult males were involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical during which one of the involved subjects produced a firearm, shooting the other involved subject at least once.

Spokesman Tim Kelley says local media are reporting that witness claim the argument was over Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday, and who would play in a movie. Kelley said the department is not confirming that motive at this time.

Both subjects received emergency medical assessment and treatment by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel before being transported to local hospitals for further treatment. The gunshot victim is considered to be in serious condition.

The investigation is ongoing and the roadway in the immediate area is also closed. No additional details are being released.
