Tazewell County, VA _  The Justice Department says a Richlands man has been charged with lying to federal agents about how he lost one hand and parts of another, and whether he was in possession of explosives.

According to court documents, Cole Carini, 23, showed up at a health clinic in Richlands with an amputated hand, fingers missing from the other hand, and shrapnel wounds on his throat and neck.  A release from the DOJ says he told officers at the hospital that the injuries were the result of a horrible lawn mower accident.

Investigators went to Carini's home and found the lawn overgrown, and a lawn mower that did not appear to have been used in some time.  What they did find was evidence of a recent explosion, consistent with the injuries Carini had sustained.

An FBI Affidavit obtained by the Daily Beast says investigators found PVC pies, wires, batteries and other potential bomb-making equipment in a shed at Carini's gradnmother's home nearby.  They also found a scorched note that spoke of tension “as he now approached the stage of hot cheerleaders," and that he would "make a statement like Elliot Rodgers."

Elliot Rodger killed six people outside a sorority house near Santa Barbara, California in 2014 and injured 14 others before killing himself.  Rodger was a self-described "incel", short for “involuntarily celibate”, a person who justifies violence against women as revenge for being rejected as sexual partners.
