Hopewell, VA _   Hopewell police have safely rescued an infant from two men, one of whom was apparently armed..

Police say at approximately 10:57 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a call for a vehicle that had just been stolen with a 6-month old infant still inside the vehicle from the WaWa located at 907 Colonial Corner Drive in Hopewell. As officers were canvassing the area, the car was located traveling North on 6th Avenue and attempted to elude police. The two offenders fled from the vehicle and leaving the vehicle in drive, causing the vehicle to travel further and come to a stop in the wooded area of a dead-end street. After a brief foot pursuit, both offenders were taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was also recovered. The infant was found to be safe and checked by Hopewell Fire and Rescue and reunited with the parents.


Offender #1 –  Alvontae Lewton Clayton, age 19 of Chesterfield, was charged with Abduction, Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, Eluding, Felony Child Endangerment, Obstruction of Justice and Violation of a Stop Light.


Offender #2 – Andre Cortez Scott, Jr., age 19 of Hopewell, was charged with  Abduction, Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, Felony Child Endangerment, Obstruction of Justice, Possession of Firearm by Felon, Possession of Ammunition by a Felon.


Detective Sergeant Trevor Terry said, “The quick work by the officers and detectives resulted in the swift arrest of two armed and dangerous perpetrators and saved the infant’s life.”  Any person(s) who may have witnessed the incident, were traveling in and around the area at the time of this incident or have any information to provide regarding these crimes, are asked to contact the Hopewell Police Department at (804) 541-2284.
