Three Arrested in Murder

Homicide is Dinwiddie's first in several years

(RICHMOND, Va. - wrva.com) - Three people are in custody in connection to a murder this week in Dinwiddie, the county's first homicide in several years.

Major William Knott with the sheriff's office says they arrested Thornell Sledge, 24, of Petersburg, Caleb Smith, 25, of Newport News, and Jhanae Short, 18, of Petersburg Thursday. All three are charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the death of 47-year-old Umar Abdus Salaam, a father and the owner of a Dinwiddie car wash, where his body was disovered Wednesday. Major knott says a motorist reported seeing a man lying on Boydton Plank Road near intersection of Richie Avenue.
