A Florida Democrat who withdrew from candidacy for a State House seat in January has admitted that she lied about treating vicitims of the Pulse shooting as a doctor, according to Florida Politics.

"I lied," Elizabeth McCarthy said, Florida Politics reported. "It is a false statement."

50-year-old McCarthy claimed during her campaign that she was a cardiologist practicing at Orlando Regional Medical Center the night of the deadly shooting at the LGBTQ night club Pulse in 2016.

Other Democrats even bought her lie, as Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL) introduced her as a doctor at one a town hall, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The Florida Department of Health investigated McCarthy's claims and found no record of her operating as a licensed medical doctor. McCarthy finally conceded and admitted she made it up.

"I wanted to be somebody in the community, and I’m sorry," she told investigators. "I’m sorry that I gave any impersonation. I knew it was wrong and I should have stopped."

The state served her a cease-and-desist order, which bans her from telling anyone else she is a medical professional, and a $3,094.95 fine for lying about being a doctor, Florida Politics reports.
