New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) announced on Monday that the city's beaches would be closed for swimming over Memorial Day weekend due to coronavirus concerns, despite Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) allowing beaches across the state to reopen.
During a news conference on Monday, de Blasio said, "If you want to walk on the beach, fine. But no swimming, no lifeguards, no parties, no barbecues, no sports."
De Blasio also warned that anyone who violates this order will "be taken right out of the water."
The mayor added that the city will put "fencing" in place if residents fail to obey his orders.
