MSNBC host Chris Matthews surprised many when he announced he would be stepping aside from his job at the network, and the speculation has swirled following several negative incidents involving the "Hardball" host.

On Monday night's edition of "Hardball," fill-in host Steve Kornacki paid tribute to the oft-controversial and abrasive Matthews, calling him a "giant" and "a legend."

Kornacki said "Um, that was a lot to take in just now, I'm sure, and I'm sure you're still absorbing that and I am, too - Chris Mathews is a giant. He's a legend. It's been an honor for me to work with him, to sit in here on occasion and I know how much you meant to him and I know how much he meant to you, and I think you're going to miss him and I know I'm going to. We’re not going to have any bells or whistles here. We do have to fill the rest of this hour. We’re going to take a quick break and come back with the day’s news."
