The Constitutional Court of South Africa upheld a ruling Wednesday that outlaws spanking and the use of any physical punishment against children nationwide, the Times of South Africa reports.

The case was originally brought to the Constitutional Court by the civil society group Freedom of Religion South Africa (FORSA) to challenge a previous ruling by the South Gauteng High Court, which ruled that parents using any physical force against their children is unconstitutional.
