George Washington University has subtly begun removing references to its "Colonials" mascot after students at the university complained it was a symbol of "oppression," according to a report from Young America's Foundation.

In February, students started a petition calling for the removal of the mascot because of its "connection to colonization" and "systematic oppression." The petition, which received more than 500 signatures, called the mascot "extremely offensive."
