On of Italy's top virologists says political correctness doomed his country's response to the coronavirus.

Dr. Giorgio Palù, a professor of virology and microbiology of the University of Padova and the former head of the European and Italian Society for Virology, said recently that leadership's concerns over politics and being dubbed "racists" slowed Rome's response to contain the COVID-19 virus.

Palù told CNN last week that Italy's refusal to impose a stricter lockdown early on and focus on certain zones resulted in its ultimate failure to contain the spread.

Italian leadership was apparently more concerned with perception than safety, as the mayor of Florence declared a "Hug a Chinese" day shortly after President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced travel restrictions to China.
