In an effort to combat pro-life laws passed in states such as Alabama and Missouri, New York City is seemingly seeking to become a sanctuary city for abortions.

Lawmakers are implementing a plan that would make NYC the first city to directly pay for abortions. Under this new policy, the city would set aside $250,000 for a special account that would fund abortions for women who can't afford to pay for the operation themselves. Yes, taxpayer money going directly towards abortions.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced on Friday the plan to include the policy in the budget.

The money would go to New York Abortion Access Fund.

De Blasio, a 2020 presidential candidate in case you forgot, praised the plan in a statement on Friday.

"We understand that there are women who need help and are having trouble getting the help they need," he said, "and the city had an opportunity here to step up."

Other pro-abortion groups celebrated this decision as well, citing it as a plan that could help women in states with pro-life laws.

"No matter where you live or how much money you make, New York City is here for you," said National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund president Andrea Miller.

The New York City council is expected to vote on the budget this week.
