Legendary National Hockey League commentator Don Cherry has been fired from his position at SportsNet following backlash from his comments about immigrants in Canada.

SportsNet PR released a statement on Cherry's firing, calling his remarks "divisive" and saying "it is the right time for him to immediately step down."

This was in response to Cherry's on-air rant Saturday criticizing immigrants for not wearing poppies meant to honor veterans for Canada's Remembrance Day.

He said, "Now you go to the small cities and you know, the rows on rows. You people love — you, that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price."

Should Don Cherry have been fired for this?
