In a not-so-surprising twist, former President Barack Obama defended the protests (which have grown violent on many occasions) across the U.S. in a virtual town hall focused on changing "systemic racism" in police departments.

Like other Democrats, Obama tried to compare the George Floyd protests to the events of the American Revolution, saying, "Just remember this country was founded on protest. It’s called the American Revolution, and every step of progress of this country. Every expansion of freedom, every expression of our deepest ideals has been won through efforts that has made the status quo uncomfortable."

Obama added that the violent protests were this country suffering the consequences of slavery, which he called the "original sin of our society."
