Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday that the United States had reversed Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama's policy that declared Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal.

Israel has occupied the land since taking it over in from Jordan in 1967 during the Six Day War and has long maintained that Jordan never had any right to it in the first place. The Carter administration declared in 1978 that the settlements violated international law, a decision that was reversed by Ronald Reagan, then reinstated by Barack Obama late in his second term.
