September 11, 2001 was a day marked by great tragedy, but also one marked by great bravery and courage. One shining example of this is Captain Kathy Mazza, the Commander of the Port Authority Police Academy, who died on September 11 while helping others to safety at the World Trade Center.

Captain Mazza reportedly used her 9mm handgun to shoot out glass walls in the mezzanine of the North Tower so that hundreds of people could escape before the tower collapsed. According to witnesses, she was last seen helping fellow first responders carry a woman out in a rescue chair.

For her acts on that day and her achievements in her career, Captain Mazza was posthumously honored in 2016 as one of the winners of the Women of Action Awards, awarded by the City Council in Jersey City.

These are the heroic stories we must always hold dear and always remember. One of America's darkest hours brought out the best in its people.
