President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will stop all U.S. funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) immediately for "putting political correctness over lifesaving measures."

Speaking at the White House coronavirus task force briefing in the Rose Garden, the president said that the U.S. would be opening an investigation into why the WHO mishandled the spread of the virus and opposed travel restrictions to China.

The U.S. is the WHO's largest donor and was poised to grant the organization $893 million in funds over the two-year funding period, according to Fox News.

The president said, "We have deep concerns over whether America's generosity has been put to the best use possible."

He added, "The WHO failed in this duty, and must be held accountable."
