The city council of Burlington, Vermont voted Monday to allow non-citizens to vote in local elections, WCAX-TV reports.

Members passed a resolution by a vote of 10-2 that would give residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote. Councilman Adam Roof, who sponsored the proposal, claimed that non-citizens are still residents of the city and should be allowed to vote regardless of their citizenship status.
