Rep. Ilhan Omar has already been slapped with campaign finance violations for a misuse of campaign funds during her 2016 Minnesota state House bid, and now she may have other problems.

Questions have been raised about tax returns that show Omar jointly filed with a man to whom she was not legally married.

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board determined that Omar illegally spent more than $3,400 in campaign funds on travel and attorney fees. She was fined $500 and ordered to repay the funds she spent.

During the investigation, the board also discovered that in 2014 and 2015, Omar had filed  joint tax returns with Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she had three children but did not legally marry until 2018.

Not only was she not married to Hirsi, she had actually been legally married to Ahmed Elmi since 2009. They had gotten a faith-based divorce in 2011. However, Omar did not legally file for divorce from Elmi until 2017.

It is still unknown exactly how many returns Omar filed with Hirsi while they were not married. The investigation only revealed those from 2014 and 2015, nothing from the years prior.

Omar and her camp have remained silent on the issue, and one spokesperson for the congresswoman said, "All of Rep. Omar's tax filings are fully compliant with all applicable tax law."
