It's not something many of us think about when we consider major problems in our society, but child marriages do still occur in the U.S. today. In fact, from 2000 to 2015, marriage records from 41 states reveal that more than 200,000 minors were married across the country, according to CBS News.

For years, there was no minimum age requirement for marriage in California. In 2017, state Senator Jerry Hill (D) introduced legislation that would prohibit marriage under the age of 18 with no exceptions. Surprisingly (or maybe not), he was met with opposition from the ACLU's Northern California chapters who claimed the problem was being exaggerated.

Why would the ACLU protest doing away with child marriages?
